Empowerment and Sources of StartUp Capital

Empowerment Means to increase the spiritual, political, social, educational, gender, or economic strength of an individuals and communities. In this context, we are going to concentrate on economic/educational empowerment to the youths.
The term empowerment covers a vast landscape of meanings, interpretations, definitions and disciplines ranging from psychology and philosophy to the highly commercialized self-help industry and motivational sciences.
Sociological empowerment often addresses members of groups that social discrimination processes have excluded from decision-making processes through - for instance, discrimination based on disability, Financial, employment,  race, ethnicity, religion, or gender. Empowerment as a methodology in Nigeria is associated with poverty.

Most unemployed people across the world rely on the casual or mini jobs for their income. If people were empowered to do more and be more, the possibility of economic growth becomes more possible. Eliminating a significant part of the nation’s work force on the sole basis of rich can have detrimental effects on the economy of that nation. In addition, female participation in counsels, groups, and businesses is seen to increase efficiency.  For a general idea on how an empowered people can impact a situation monetarily, a study found that of fortune 500 companies, “those with more women board directors had significantly higher financial returns, including 53 percent higher returns on equity, 24 percent higher returns on sales and 67 percent higher returns on invested capital (OECD, 2008).”  This study shows the impact women can have on the overall economic benefits of a company. If implemented on a global scale, the inclusion of women in the formal workforce (like a fortune 500 company) can increase the economic output of a nation.
In economic development, the empowerment approach focuses on mobilizing the self-help efforts of the poor, rather than providing them with social welfare. Economic empowerment is also the empowering of previously disadvantaged sections of the population, for example, in many previously colonized African countries. One must ask and answer such question as, how do we empower the poor? Do we give them money to start business without training? Or do we give them the appropriate training and skills? Since empowerment is the process of increasing the capacity of individuals or groups to make choices and to transform those choices into desired actions and outcomes. Central to this process are actions which both build individual and collective assets, and improve the efficiency and fairness of the organizational and institutional context which govern the use of these assets.  Answers to the above question should be to “teach a child how to catch a fish and not to give a child fish”.  This simply means that providing skills/training on how to make/create wealth is the ultimate rather than giving them money without giving the adequate training on how to manage the money, hence government interest in skills acquisition/ entrepreneurship   programmes in Nigeria.

This is with reference to unemployment reduction, job and wealth creation, poverty reduction, and self-reliance motive of the government. Further, Entrepreneurship education has been included in the curricula of tertiary institutions in Nigeria and yet the situation has not changed. This so because the curricula is based on theory and not practicalised. It is in the light of this obvious problem and the imminent danger to the society compounded by the present global economic meltdown that this paper is canvassing for skill oriented and practical based entrepreneurship training in secondary and tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
